How To Create A Shortcut In Google Assistant?

When you are using the google assistant for common task on daily basis it’s great to make a shortcut so with one word you can invoke a long ‘command’. One of the first shortcuts I have created is ‘bitcoin’ which is translated to “OK google, talk to bitcoin info about the price”. Let’s see below how you can easily work with the shortcuts inside the Google Assistant. See in the short video below how to create it and use it.

Create

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home (check below how to do that).
To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings and then Shortcuts and then Add
  5. For “When I say Ok Google…”
    1. Type the phrase you want to say to trigger the shortcut or tap the microphone  and speak it.
  6. For “Google Assistant should do,”
    1. Type what you want to happen or tap the microphone  and speak it. Important: You must structure the this phrase like a supported voice command.
  7. Tap Save.

Use

Simply say “Hey Google, <shortcut>” and your Assistant will respond.

Example: “When I say OK Google bitcoin”, the Google Assistant should ‘translate it’ to <talk to bitcoin info about the price>

Manage

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.
To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  4. Tap More settings and then Shortcuts.

There are cases where you have few accounts and you wish to confirm that the same account that you are using on your phone is the one that is also working on your Google Home (or any other voice only device). You can check it out by following the 6 steps below.

Check which Google Account is linked to a Google Home/Mini/Max device

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top right corner of the app’s Home screen, tap Devices .
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home device.
  5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings.
  6. Underneath “Linked accounts(s),” you’ll see the Google Account(s) linked to this specific Google Home device.

That’s it for today. Create useful shortcuts!
